Immigrants in Detention Centers Are Often Hundreds of Miles From Legal Help

Most immigrants in detention centers are not entitled to government-appointed lawyers and are often held in facilities that are far away from any type of legal help. Although new efforts are being made to provide legal counsel to detainees since President Trump’s executive order to increase the number of detention centers – which currently stands at 200 facilities – many of the resources remain unevenly distributed. The limited access to legal help places detainees at a disadvantage before the immigration court, even those with strong cases.

Inmigrantes en Centros de Detención Suelen Estar a Cientos de Millas de Ayuda Legal

La mayor parte de inmigrantes en centros de detención no tienen derecho a un abogado designado por el gobierno y suelen ser detenidos en centros que se encuentran lejos de cualquier tipo de ayuda legal. Desde la orden ejecutiva del Presidente Trump para incrementar el número de centros de detención – actualmente hay 200 centros – se están haciendo nuevos esfuerzos para proveer consejería legal a detenidos pero muchos de los recursos permanecen desigualmente distribuidos. El acceso limitado a ayuda legal sitúa a detenidos en una desventaja ante la corte de inmigración, incluso aquellos con casos fuertes.
