Shift in Deportation Centers

The local branch of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has recently shifted the transfer of immigration detainees from the Broadview Processing Facility to the Kankakee County Detention Center. Seventy miles south of Chicago, the Kankakee facility allows for the housing and processing for removal of individuals. Last Wednesday, an ICE spokesperson said that there were 128 ICE detainees at the Kankakee facility and that the shift was made to “make better use of ICE resources.” The unannounced shift raised concern among families of detainees as well as among local immigration attorneys.
